We are looking for a freelance research assistant to support our Chair, Keith Palmer, finalise a series of studies into the causes of the jobless growth and low average incomes in sub-Saharan Africa.
Specific tasks include abstracting and presenting relevant data sources, preparing graphs, tables and diagrams to a publishable quality, accessing and cataloguing references, fact checking and other support as required. If the chosen candidate shows aptitude and strong interest, there may also be opportunities for independent research.
Qualifications
The appointee must have demonstrable ability and experience undertaking the tasks listed including using relevant software packages.
He/she will be a self-starter capable of undertaking the required tasks with limited supervision.
He/she is likely to be an economics or development economics graduate with familiarity with economic statistics.
Candidates with a strong interest in the subject of the studies preferred.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to demonstrate their ability to undertake the tasks listed.
The position
The position is part-time payable at an annual rate of £40,000 per annum. The time commitment and duration of the assignment are deliberately flexible to accommodate the requirements of the best candidate. The minimum time commitment will be 20 hours/week paid at a rate of £20/hour over a period of up to one year, and the maximum time commitment will be 40 hours/week over a period of six months.
Pre-agreed tasks will be provided and discussed periodically and undertaken largely remotely, except that an initial in-person meeting at the start is essential and occasional further in-person meetings may be agreed. There will be periodic, roughly weekly online meetings to review and discuss work in progress with Keith.
Either party may terminate the arrangement by giving one month notice. Time sheets will be required each month and payment will be made at the end of each month.
